INTRODUCTION

A GENERAL OVERVIEW

The Mantova Campus of Politecnico di Milano and the Municipalities
of Castelnuovo del Garda, Sommacampagna, Sona and
Valeggio sul Mincio, in collaboration with ICS Istituto
Commercio Servizi di Vicenza are launching an International
Competition for ideas in the field of architectural and landscape
design, aimed at enhancing the collective spaces of the historic
town centres of the four Verona Municipalities and the nature trails
that branch out in the territories of the Morainic Garda Hills.
The competition is open to students from
national and international schools of Architecture,
Design, Engineering, Landscape and Urban Planning.
The initiative is aimed at promoting
memory and culture, preserving architectural and landscape
features, and enhancing the historical and natural heritage of the
Morainic territories, through the regeneration of identity, aware
ness of the value and perception of their great beauty.
The iconic and homogeneous territory of the Morainic Hills is a
succession of sinuous profiles, shallow hollows and sheets of water
that bring to mind the ancient glacier that shaped its morphology
over time. The Morainic Amphitheatre embraces Lake Garda to the
south and winds its way through the Po Valley for over a hundred
kilometres: a lush green landscape, a succession of woods and fruit and
vegetable cultivations in which vineyards are the undisputed protagonists.

Man’s settlement in this area dates back to prehistoric times: over the
centuries, the slow anthropisation has delicately transformed its
characteristics, without altering the environmental aspects, which
today represent the area’s greatest asset.
Observing the system of settlements, one can see the concentration
of medieval castle complexes perched on the hills, which in ancient
times limited the boundary of the Duchy of Mantua in the northern
part of the Province.
Over time, these complexes, or what remains of them, have taken on
an iconic role, even on an international level, thanks to their dominant
position to the villages in the area.
Together with the landscape and architecture, it is also important to
remember the history of this borderland – an ideal chessboard for war
tactics -, which has been the scene of numerous military and political
conflicts: from the medieval struggles between the Gonzaga family of
Mantua and the Scaligeri family of Verona, to the 19th-century battles
for independence against Austria, which still leave their mark on the
territory and on local memory.

THE COMPETITIONS

The International Ideas Competition “MORAINIC IDENTITY
REGENERATION COMPETITIONS” is composed of two
independent Project Categories: Urban Design and Landscape.
Participants may choose to compete in one or both Categories,
with the possibility of entering and ranking in the two award lists.
The projects in each category will be judged by two juries of
experts specialised in Urban Design and Landscape.
Participation may be individual or in groups; each working group
may consist of a maximum of 5 participants.
This competition is for young students only,
consult the regulations in the full competition brief to check
if you are eligible to participate.
The competition simultaneously involves the four municipalities of
Castelnuovo del Garda, Sona, Sommacampagna and Valeggio sul
Mincio, in order to strengthen their connections and interactions
with the vast territory of Garda Lake, and to enhance their specific
features with a view to continuity and landscape coherence.
For each competition category, participants will have to develop
four projects: one for each municipality involved.
To see the project sites consult the file sites specifics of the
category for which you wish to compete.

_MORAINIC IDENTITY URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION
Projects for the regeneration of collective spaces in the
settlements of the Morainic Hills, characterised by a dense
residential and productive fabric and by places for public life
that are sometimes undefined or lacking in identity.
By redesigning streets and squares and defining new urban
spaces, the local communities can once again recognise
themselves and, in the contemporary world, share traditions,
establish relationships and thus produce a new culture of
living in the places of history.
_MORAINIC IDENTITY LANDSCAPE COMPETITION
Projects for the requalification of slow-mobility paths, which
guarantee a better accessibility and fruition of the
environment and of the morainic landscape, which enhance
the observation and rest points, which reconfigure the green
areas of historical importance within the urban areas. With
the consolidation of the paths and the new facilities
connected to them, there will be a significant enhancement
of the nature tourism experience in the area
